On November 6th, 2011, Alex was cycling on his way down from Medvednica (the mountain north of Zagreb). Everything was fine until one slippery part where he missed the turn and in the unfortunate fall, his head directly hit a tree. The impact was very strong and witnessed by his friend Ivan who was riding a bicycle behind him. After a call to 112 Center and thanks to the efficient rescue from the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service and the Zagreb Health Paramedic Division Alex was promptly transported to the University Clinic for Trauma in Zagreb. That same evening he was in the O.R. where a surgeon named Nenad Somun, MD did all that he could do to repair the injury on the spinal cord. Unfortunately, impact completely shattered his 6th cervical vertebra and significantly dislocated the 7th. That didn't give Alex much of a chance for optimism. The diagnosis was horrific: tetraplegia with a slight possibility for independent swallowing and a loss of all sensations bellow the neck. But the morning after brought a shade of light and optimism, Alex could move his left upper arm and fist and the following day he moved the right upper arm as well! After 5 days he was transferred from the ICU to the Center for Spine surgery and under the supervision of Zvonko Kejla, MD, he continued the recovery and rehabilitation and begin the biggest battle of his life.
